Walking for Clara

9th June 2011
A few months ago my sister Lesley rang to say she had received a poster about the Spring Walk in N. Ireland. We decided to sign up for the Carnlough to Whitehead section, along with Jayne, who likes a challenge. After much tramping around the streets of Stockton and several rural walks too, often accompanied by Dave, June 1st dawned. We arrived at the Londonderry Arms Hotel with rucksacks and bows (thank you Claire), full of enthusiasm. Our vision of a stroll along the beautiful Coast Road with its sweeping bays and dramatic cliffs, with rests for refreshments and the occasional paddle in the sea to ease our weary feet, was soon shattered! We had to walk between the two escort vehicles and after 14m without stopping we arrived in Larne, had some lunch and set off again for the last 10 miles. Lesley walked 12.5 m, a tremendous achievement for her as only a year ago she could barely walk 50yds - well done Lesley. Jayne did a great job with the bucket and no, she didn't cadge a lift on the bus! The local people and drivers along the route were very generous although we did fear for the lives of both Steves on a few occasions when they were dodging around the traffic with their buckets! Whitehead was a very welcome sight, and so, back to Jayne's house where her husband Alan made the best cup of tea I've ever had!!!!! Hats off to Steve and all his team, to Donna who walked for 5 days and Andy and Georgina who walked all 201m. Many thanks to all the friends and family who sponsored us and encouraged us - really appreciated.
